Synopsis 1917. Elementary school teacher Gino Montanari, known as Patacca, enlists in the Italian army fighting the Austrians during the Great War. He is an unusual corporal (and teacher): an atheist, an unrepentant bachelor, and an anti-interventionist. His adventures at the front bring him into contact with a bad sergeant and a small group of soldiers from various regions of Italy, including a boy from Capri, Aniello known as 'O Scugnizzo, who sees in Gino the father figure he has never known.
