The Civil War has finally ended and the Union states are faced with the problem of the Indian presence in the Western territories. Colonel Kirby Yorke (John Wayne) is the commander of a frontier fort located near the Rio Grande, and has been assigned to train a group of new recruits, including his own son, who has failed the academy exams and whom he has not seen for 15 years and has volunteered to enlist. To complete the picture, the boy's mother (Maureen O'Hara) also arrives, intent on taking the boy back. Private Yorke, despite being in open conflict with his father, decides to stay and fight the Apache Indians, but the colonel will have to organize a mission to save some white children taken hostage by the Apaches and, at the same time, try to resolve the knots of his own intricate family story. The third and final episode of John Ford's military trilogy, together with "The Northwest Knights" and "Fort Apache Massacre", is also known in Italy as Rio Bravo, the original title of a film by Howard Hawks, and retains the same underlying theme, that of the role of the army in the Indian war, which the American director addresses with the same meticulous attention to the aspects of military life shown in the other two chapters of the trilogy.
