A group of American soldiers, who form the Army Rifle Company "Charlie", are preparing to land on the island of Guadalcanal, in the South Pacific. The objective is to take the important garrison away from the Japanese. Surprisingly, there is no resistance during the landing, and the soldiers are able to enter the island. The Japanese have retreated to the top of the hills, and it is from there that the Americans must flush them out. The enterprise cannot be achieved without the sacrifice of many men, but Colonel Tall is inflexible and Captain Staros, who refuses to carry out the order, is dismissed. After long ambushes, the hill is conquered, many Japanese soldiers die or are taken prisoner. The battle is over, but only for the moment. And the difference with the splendid natural landscape remains strident.
