The Marquis del Grillo lives in a fairy-tale house, surrounded by equally fairy-tale characters who each live in a world of their own and who struggle to fit into reality: a loving but hostile and conservative mother, a poor relative named Genuflessa, who is secretly in love with him, a married sister with a child. To escape boredom, the Marquis del Grillo often mixes with the people, frequenting taverns and inns, and right at the end of one of these evenings he finds a drunk, a certain Gasperino, a charcoal burner by profession, who is his perfect double. Driven by a taste for mockery, Onofrio picks him up and takes him home, where he will put on a brilliant farce so as to make poor Gasperino pass for the Marquis del Grillo even in the eyes of his own relatives, who do not notice the substitution while Gasperino adapts very well to this character. We are in full French occupation and when the Pope is deprived of temporal power, the Marquis del Grillo decides to leave Rome. However, during the trip he learns of Napoleon's fall so he returns there. But here Onofrio will find a surprise: the Pope has condemned him to death for desertion and treason having abandoned his post of guard. In his place, poor Gasperino is arrested and, happy once again to pass himself off as the Marquis, dead drunk sets off towards...The Marquis of Grillo ( Il Marchese del Grillo ) ( Le Marquis s'amuse )
