Synopsis Admiral Canaris, head of the German secret service, is a very skilled and humane man. With the advent of Hitler, Canaris finds himself in conflict with the new currents, in particular with General Heydrich, who judges him to be incompetent, seeking a way to ruin him and have him sidelined. In 1939 Canaris understands that Hitler's fanaticism is leading Germany to war, and after learning of the dramatic situation thanks to his contacts, he makes repeated attempts, but in vain, to open the eyes of Hitler and the high command, drawing their attention to the very powerful means of the Allies. When the war, which the admiral has tried in vain to avert, appears imminent, he tries to make contact with the Anglo-Americans to negotiate an honorable surrender. But his movements have been followed by the Gestapo and upon his return to Germany, Canaris is dismissed and hanged by order of the Fuhrer.
