A scholar of physical and mathematical problems, not yet sixteen years old he published the "Essay on Conics" and later conducted studies on the calculation of probabilities and indivisibles, inventing the first calculating machine and the hydraulic press. In 1646 he came into contact with Jansenism which gave rise to his interest in philosophy and theology.
